Robert Brown Gallery has an extensive inventory of Chinese advertising posters dating from 1912 to 1937. These lithographs were produced by Western, Japanese, and Chinese companies to promote the sale of their products in China. Using beautiful women or historical scenes as the primary subject matter, the products being advertised in many cases seem to appear almost as an afterthought. Art Deco influences were common and the posters were designed predominantly by established Shanghai artists.
